Frequently Asked Questions
-
Am I eligible to receive an electric breast pump covered by insurance?
Yes, a vast majority of mothers with health insurance, Medicaid or Private/Commercial Insurance, may receive an electric breast pump covered by insurance. However, you must receive your breast pump from an “in-network” Durable Medical Equipment (DME) company and a prescription is necessary.
-
How much will my insurance pay for an electric breast pump?
Each insurance company allows/pays a different amount. Neb Medical can verify your coverage, but we will need your demographics and insurance information in order to confirm. If you wish to call your plan, you can ask for benefits on the procedure code E0603 (electric breast pump). Some plans will provide you with a maximum allowed amount. If your plan has a low reimbursement amount for E0603, Neb Medical can offer higher end pump options with the addition of a customer upgrade charge.
-
How often can I receive a new electric breast pump covered by insurance?
Medicaid allows 1 electric breast pump every 5 years in Illinois, and 1 per lifetime in Wisconsin
Most Blue Cross Blue Shield plans allow 1 electric breast pump per pregnancy.
However, each insurance is different and your DME provider can verify the insurance maximum benefit frequency for you, prior to shipment. It is important to disclose any prior pump purchases with insurance to Neb Medical so that we can ensure full coverage. You may also call your plan directly to inquire about how often they will cover procedure code E0603 (electric breast pump). -
Can I receive a breast pump prior to delivery?
To ensure coverage, Neb Medical can ship up to 90 days before your expected delivery date. Since your pump warranty begins on the ship date, it would be beneficial to wait until 30 days out to get the most time out of your pump motor warranty. You can let us know what time frame works best for you. Your request and doctor’s written order can be sent at any time during your pregnancy, and we will reserve your electric breast pump.

Why are breast pumps covered by insurance?
The ACA was signed into law in 2010. The Preventive Services for Women provisions require health plans to cover breastfeeding services and supplies without cost-sharing (i.e. no co-payment or deductible). Many health plans implemented this change with the first plan/policy year that begins on or after August 1, 2012.* *Institute of Medicine.
